Large, bulging veins can cause a number of problems, including pain, swelling or itchiness in affected areas. To help you find relief from your symptoms, Dr. Lev at Advanced Varicose Vein Treatments of Manhattan may recommend ambulatory phlebectomy — an effective and minimally-invasive technique for getting rid of varicose veins on your legs, feet and ankles with just one treatment.

OPTIMAL RESULTS, MINIMAL RECOVERY

They may look unsightly and cause pain, swelling or itching in the lower legs, reducing your self-esteem and overall quality of life. At Advanced Varicose Vein Treatments of Manhattan, board-certified physician and vein specialist Dr. Ronald Lev can help you eliminate these concerns with ambulatory phlebectomy. A highly effective and minimally-invasive treatment option, ambulatory phlebectomy completely removes affected veins to provide relief from both cosmetic and physical symptoms.

WHAT IS AMBULATORY PHLEBECTOMY?

In the past, vein stripping was the primary treatment for removing severe varicose veins. While effective, this procedure typically involved large incisions, the use of general anesthesia and an overnight hospital stay. It also resulted in significant downtime and a lengthy recovery, with no guarantee that varicose veins wouldn’t return in treated areas.

Today, ambulatory phlebectomy is the most prescribed treatment for addressing large, twisting varicose veins. In nearly all cases, vein stripping has been replaced by this minimally-invasive procedure, which delivers better results with less pain, fewer side effects and limited downtime. Unlike vein stripping, ambulatory phlebectomy uses tiny incisions and a specialized tool to remove diseased veins with less trauma. The incisions are too small to need sutures, and patients are able to return home the same day as their treatment.

At Advanced Varicose Vein Treatments of Manhattan, we know that varicose veins are more than an aesthetic concern. These bulging veins may be accompanied by uncomfortable side effects, including swelling, pain and a feeling of heaviness in the legs, feet or ankles. Ambulatory phlebectomy effectively removes these diseased veins for an improved cosmetic appearance and relief from unwanted symptoms.

BENEFITS OF AMBULATORY PHLEBECTOMY

Ambulatory phlebectomy provides a number of benefits for people suffering from large varicose veins and chronic venous insufficiency. By completely removing the affected veins, it provides immediate symptom relief and lasting results. Ambulatory phlebectomy can also be performed in-office at our downtown or midtown locations in Manhattan.

Other advantages of this procedure include:

  • No stitches or sutures needed to close the small incisions
  • Low incidence of a recurrence of varicose veins in treated areas
  • Results are apparent immediately after the procedure
  • Completely removes diseased veins
  • Minimally-invasive approach means little discomfort and downtime
  • Local anesthesia reduces the risk of complications or side effects
  • Performed in-office for quick, convenient appointments

Depending on your needs, ambulatory phlebectomy can be combined with other minimally-invasive procedures to ensure comprehensive results. This might include sclerotherapy, endovenous laser treatments, or VenaSeal. During your first appointment, Dr. Lev can help you explore your options and develop a personalized treatment plan.

HOW DOES AMBULATORY PHLEBECTOMY WORK?

Ambulatory phlebectomy is performed as an outpatient procedure, using local anesthesia to ensure your comfort. Tiny incisions are made on the leg along the affected area, and a small, specialized “hook” tool is used to remove the vein in small sections. The procedure continues in this fashion until the entire vein is eliminated. Once it’s gone, the body will naturally divert the blood flow through healthy veins nearby. After treatment, compression dressings are placed over the incisions, which are so small that no stitches are required.

The procedure generally takes an hour or less to complete, but this may vary depending on the size and number of veins being removed. Although some patients opt to bring someone with them to their appointment or otherwise arrange for transportation, you will be able to walk or drive home if you choose. In fact, walking is actually encouraged to promote good circulation and improve the healing process.

RECOVERY & RESULTS

After your procedure, you’ll be allowed to return to normal activities without any restrictions. While ambulatory phlebectomy requires no downtime and has few side effects, you might notice some bruising and swelling in treated areas. This is normal and shouldn’t be significant enough to interfere with your daily return. In the next week or so, it will gradually subside. To reduce swelling quicker and promote proper healing, Dr. Lev may recommend the use of compression stockings for a couple of days after your appointment.

You’ll see improvements right away, with a noticeable reduction in painful symptoms. Since the entire diseased vein is removed, you’ll find significant relief from aches, discomfort, swelling, itchiness, cramps and a heavy feeling in the legs. Most patients are able to achieve their desired results after just one treatment, but this procedure can be safely repeated if other veins begin to twist or bulge. Typically, ambulatory phlebectomy has a low rate of recurrence, making it a highly effective treatment option for varicose veins.

AM I A CANDIDATE FOR AMBULATORY PHLEBECTOMY?

Ambulatory phlebectomy may be right for you if you suffer from painful, twisted varicose veins in the leg. Usually, it’s performed when the veins are too large to be addressed with other methods, such as sclerotherapy or laser treatments. In these cases, ambulatory phlebectomy is often recommended because these veins are accompanied by uncomfortable symptoms. During treatment, the discomfort is eliminated at the same time the veins are removed, providing immediate relief from pain, swelling or itching.

If you’re interested in this treatment, you may be a candidate if:

  • You have large, bulging and symptomatic varicose veins
  • Other vein treatments haven’t been effective at eliminating them
  • You’re bothered by pain, itching, swelling and heaviness in the legs
  • You prefer a minimally invasive procedure with minimal downtime

Ambulatory phlebectomy may not be the right option for patients with arterial circulation issues, active rashes, clotting disorders or infections. Dr. Lev will perform a thorough evaluation to determine whether the procedure is appropriate for your particular situation.
